45 days of construction coming soon to this section of Yelm Highway

Road construction is coming to a section of Yelm Highway next month after the Lacey City Council voted to award the contract this week.

The $1.42 million contract was awarded to Lakeside Industries of Lacey. The work is expected to start in September and last 45 days.

The work will repave and reconstruct a section of Yelm Highway that runs from the Ruddell Road intersection towards Chambers Prairie Elementary and following the curve of the highway to Balustrade Boulevard Southeast.

Two types of road construction will take place on that stretch of road, Public Works Director Scott Egger told the council on Tuesday.

“The project includes both grind overlay work, but it also includes a full-depth roadway reconstruction,” Egger said. “So the grind overlay portion of work is about a two-and-a-half-inch-deep grind, and then an overlay with fiber reinforced asphalt. The full-depth reconstruction will be six inches of asphalt placed on top of eight inches of compacted rock base.”

The road will be re-striped after the work is done and utility adjustments made along the route.

Egger said the simpler repaving effort will occur on the north-south and east-west portions of the highway, while just beyond the curve will get the reconstruction.

“As soon as you get around the curve — if you’re familiar with that part of the roadway — the westbound or the north side of the road is in really poor shape,” he said. “So that’s the portion that’s going to be the full-depth reconstruction.”

The four bidders on the project

Lakeside Industries of Lacey, $1.42 million.

Tucci & Sons of Tacoma, $1.54 million.

Granite Construction Co. of Olympia, $1.64 million.

Miles Resources of Puyallup, $1.78 million.
