A project to remove fish barriers near the Thurston-Mason county line will have a major impact on a major highway starting this week, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, the following will unfold:

Both directions of U.S. 101 will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Highway traffic won’t return to two lanes until this fall.

The 60 mile per hour speed limit will be slowed to 45 mph between mileposts 356 and milepost 357.

The U.S. 101 median at Old Olympic Highway will close.

Old Olympic Highway near the work zone will have no access to U.S. 101. West Old Olympic Highway, located further north, will remain open.

The project is designed to help fish migrate through the area more easily, according to WSDOT.
