Lacey’s MakerSpace wins Governor’s Smart Communities award. Here’s what that means
Lacey’s MakerSpace has been a place for Thurston County businesses to get their start for five years now.
Created through a collaboration between the City of Lacey, Saint Martin’s University and the Thurston Economic Development Council, the space has earned a Governor’s Smart Communities award for exceptional land use planning and development.
According to a news release from the Washington state Department of Commerce, the joint endeavor between the city and its partners provides community access to high-tech equipment, education and workforce training.
Just this year, the space underwent a major expansion that cost $1.4 million. Now there’s space for high-tech manufacturing equipment, welding, wood working, textiles and 3D printing.
Lacey City Manager Rick Walk said the expanded facility allows for more space for folks to learn new skills and enhance their products. It also supports workforce development by connecting hands-on training and apprenticeship programs with employers.
“This speaks directly to our vision for economic development for the City of Lacey,” Walk said in the release.
Gov. Jay Inslee said each year the awards give him the change to elevate plans, projects and partnerships that change how the state of Washington is perceived.
Department of Commerce director Mike Fong said in the release the awards are a reminder that work on the state’s most important issues takes place at a community level.
“From housing to climate to equity, we are proud to see these transformative efforts taking place every year, strengthening our communities,” he said.
