A driver speeding down Martin Way early Monday turned out to be a 17-year-old boy with no license, Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders posted on social media.

About 2:20 a.m., Sanders was driving down Martin Way East, near River Ridge Drive, when a car without its lights on caught his attention.

“The vehicle was swerving across the roadway, and suddenly sped off at speeds of 80 mph in a 35 mph zone. I attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle eventually slowed down and yielded,” he said in his post.

A photo shows the driver was stopped in the 9300 block of Martin Way East.

Sanders later learned that the 17-year-old was driving a friend around in his mom’s car.

“Thurston 911 got me a phone number for mom, who was unaware her child took the car. She didn’t have access to a second vehicle ... so one of our deputies gave her a ride to the scene of the traffic stop.”

Sanders said there was no need to bury them in impound fees, tickets and criminal citations.

“It became very clear that mom was quite dissatisfied with her son and more than willing to hold her kid accountable in a more meaningful and effective manner,” Sanders said.
