The driver of a Honda minivan crashed into a horse on Wiggins Road Tuesday night, killing the animal, according to Olympia police.

About 9:45 p.m., 911 received two calls about a horse loose on the road in the 2800 block that had just been hit by a vehicle, Police Lt. Paul Lower said.

Lower said the driver told officers he saw some headlights flash at him, but he didn’t know why, then suddenly the horse was right in front of him and he crashed into it.

At the time of the crash it was unknown who the horse belonged to, Lower said. Thurston County Animal Services was trying to contact the owner, he said.

The city’s public works department was called in to remove the horse from the road.

Although the impact crushed the hood and windshield of the minivan, the driver was not hurt, Lower said.
