An unidentified male driver was killed early Sunday morning in a crash off the freeway in south Thurston County, according to the Washington State Patrol.

About 4:15 a.m., the driver was headed south on Interstate 5 at a “high rate” of speed. Troopers say the driver drove off the roadway south of the Maytown rest area where the vehicle came to a stop in the trees and caught on fire.

County Coroner Gary Warnock said Sunday that his office will be relying on a dental records to identify the man.

The road was blocked for nearly six hours after the crash, according to State Patrol.
