South Lacey residents unable to extinguish a dryer fire themselves had to call in Lacey Fire District 3 Sunday afternoon.

Lacey fire crews were dispatched at 3:56 p.m. to the fire inside a home in the 7000 block of Stone Street, on the east side of Rainier Road near Horizons Elementary School. Deputy Fire Chief Jennifer Schmidt said the first crew was in and out of the scene in less than an hour.

Schmidt said the reporting party advised they had been working to put out the dryer fire but were unsuccessful, and the house was filling with smoke. Crews arrived at 4:04 p.m. and evacuated the family and their pets.

Firefighters pulled the dryer outside to put out the fire. Schmidt said the home was released back to the homeowner at 4:54 p.m.

Schmidt said dryer fires happen quite frequently for various reasons, from equipment failures to maintenance and upkeep, to animals nesting inside the machines. She said many of the fires are extinguished by residents, but the best-case scenario is when the fire department is called to help.
