The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office seeks witnesses and more information about a shooting in the Yelm area Sunday morning, the agency announced.

Although SWAT personnel searched the site, including structures, trailers and outbuildings, a suspect was not found.

About 7:25 a.m. Sunday, deputies were dispatched to reports of a shooting in the 16900 block of 148th Ave. SE, which is south of Yelm near Lake Lawrence.

A woman in her 30s had been shot and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Brooks previously said.

As deputies began to investigate and track down witnesses, another gunshot was heard, Brooks said. The investigation was paused and SWAT members were called to the scene.

The sheriff’s office now thinks the gunshot may have been intended as a distraction while the suspect fled.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact detectives at detectives@co.thurston.wa.us.
