Movies al fresco aren’t over yet

Yes, summer’s end is starting to feel awfully near, and yes, the kids are back at school. But you can still catch an outdoor flick. The Port of Olympia is wrapping up the area’s outdoor film screenings Saturday, Sept. 7, with a screening of “The Goonies” at Movies at the Marina. “The Goonies,” for the uninitiated, is a 1985 adventure about a group of misfits on a quest to find a pirate’s buried treasure. Beloved by large swaths of Gen X, the film — a sort of Indiana Jones in which the adventurers are children — was based on short story by none other than Steven Spielberg, the film’s executive producer. The film, rated PG, starts at 8 p.m. at Swantown Marina, south of the Marina office, 1022 Marine Drive NE, Olympia. Admission is free; bring a chair and blanket.

Playwright Longenbaugh provides ‘home’ theater

If John Longenbaugh’s name sounds familiar, that’s most likely because you’ve seen “Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol,” which Harlequin Productions mounted in 2019. Longenbaugh wrote the much-produced holiday mashup, in which an ill-tempered Sherlock is transformed by ghostly visitors. Longenbaugh is now living in Olympia, and his east side Olympia home is the venue for his latest play, “Our House,” in its opening weekend. Inspired by Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” the play examines one house through time and space, exploring (as the press release puts it) “history, love, death and really good cocktails.” Longenbaugh and fellow playwright Bryan Willis are co-directing the show, which features actors Mathaeus Andersen, Meghan Goodman, Jesse Morrow and Mark Waldstein. Performances, which can accommodate just 14 people each, are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 5-8, plus Sept. 12-15 and 19-22. Tickets are $35 at brownpapertickets, and they include snacks and a drink ticket.

Burlesque and beyond

September is Hispanic Heritage Month, and “Azúcar: A Latine Cabaret Experience” sounds like a sweet way to kick off the celebration. Described as “cabaret meets talk show,” the latest “Azúcar,” happening Saturday, Sept. 7, focuses on burlesque but also includes drag and a surprise guest. Hosted by burlesque artists Latina K Turner D’Ho and VenDetta Petty Kash D’Ho, the show features performances by Papaya Magic Cabaret, Ducle, Vanessa the Witch and Sneaky Boo. The action — for ages 18 and older — starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box at South Puget Sound Community College’s Minnaert Center for the Arts, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia. Tickets are $35.

Freelance writer Molly Gilmore talks with DJ Kevin the Brit about what’s happening around town on KGY-FM’s “Oly in a Can,” airing at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays.
