First responders had to extract a patient from a burning vehicle that crashed on State Route 8 near Summit Lake on Wednesday.

Fire crews and medics responded just after 5:30 p.m. to an “entrapment motor vehicle accident with a fire” near Wilson Road Northwest, according to a Facebook post by the McLane Black Lake Fire Department.

Crews extinguished the fire and began a “very technical vehicle extraction,” the post says. An Airlift Northwest helicopter with purple University of Washington Medicine branding then landed on State Route 8 to airlift the patient to a hospital.

The post indicates Washington State Patrol helped keep traffic flowing while the helicopter was on the ground.

Trooper John Datillo posted about the incident on X, describing it as a “single vehicle collision with serious injuries” that initially blocked the eastbound left lane.

All eastbound lanes and part of the westbound lanes were later blocked while the helicopter responded to the scene, according to a separate Washington State Department of Transportation post on X.

A follow-up WSDOT post indicated the roadway reopened about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The Olympian asked Datillo to provide more details about the crash, but he said he did not have details to share as of Thursday morning.
