Eastway Circle Apartments at 1125 12th Ave. SE were evacuated early Monday morning after a fire broke out at an abandoned building nearby.

Jason Waters, battalion chief with the Olympia Fire Department, said the call was originally dispatched at 1:30 a.m. Nov. 25. It was reported that an abandoned building behind the apartments was on fire. The building and apartments are east of Eastside Street Southeast, near Interstate 5.

He said because the call first came in as a commercial structure fire, mutual aid was triggered and Lacey Fire District 3 helped respond. The request for help was canceled once LFD3 arrived at the scene.

Waters said the building was fully involved in flames when crews arrived, and the fire was just 20 feet from the apartments. He said the fire had destroyed the roof of the building, which made it easier for fire personnel to hit more areas with water.

The fire was out before 2 a.m., Waters said. The cause is still under investigation.
