A Cowlitz County man died at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia on Nov. 29, days after he drove through an intersection with a roundabout in Grand Mound, hit a median and rolled his vehicle.

The man was identified as Matthew R. Dipiero, 60, from Longview.

According to a news release from the Washington State Patrol, Dipiero was driving east at a high speed on State Route 12 west of Sargent Road just before midnight on Nov. 25. He drove through the intersection of Sargent Road and struck the raised median at the roundabout, which caused his vehicle to roll.

The vehicle came to a rest blocking one lane of westbound traffic on SR 12. The roadway was blocked for nearly two hours.

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said Dipiero was pronounced dead at the hospital on Nov. 29. The cause of the incident was driving under the influence, according to WSP.
