A Shelton police officer was stabbed in the hand Thursday while trying to take a suspect into custody, according to Shelton police.

The male suspect was wanted by the state Department of Corrections.

About 11:30 a.m. Dec. 5, police were dispatched to assist a DOC officer who saw a wanted man walking in the 2200 block of Olympic Highway North, east of U.S. Highway 101.

Shelton police located the man near Olympic Highway North and D Street, then chased him on foot.

“When a Shelton officer attempted to take custody of the man, the officer was stabbed in the hand by the suspect,” the news release reads. “With the assistance of other law enforcement officers, the suspect was arrested without further incident.”

The officer was treated at the scene by medics, then taken to Mason General Hospital in Shelton. The officer is expected to make a full recovery, according to the release.

The suspect was booked into the Mason County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstructing law enforcement and a DOC warrant.
