Criminal charges have been referred to the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office after one driver confronted another driver, resulting in both men grabbing tools to defend themselves, according to Olympia police.

About 5:25 p.m. Dec. 6, the 21-year-old male driver of a small passenger car slowed down for I-5 traffic and a 64-year-old man’s pick-up truck ran into the car’s back end, Police Lt. Paul Lower said.

The two men then exited the freeway and stopped in the 3000 block of Pacific Avenue Southeast. The two men began to argue, then police say the older man began to assault the younger man. The younger man then removed a sledgehammer from his car to defend himself. The older man grabbed a pitchfork.

The older man eventually left the scene, but the younger man stayed behind, Lower said. Washington State Patrol arrived to investigate the initial freeway crash, he said.

Police officers were able to identify the license of the pick-up truck and have referred criminal charges to the prosecutor’s office for review, Lower said.
