A 16-year-old boy is dead and a 33-year-old man is in custody after he was arrested Monday on suspicion of multiple crimes, including controlled substance homicide, according to Olympia police.

On Dec. 19, the teen was found unconscious by family members at a home in the area of 18th Avenue Southeast and Hoffman Road, Lt. Paul Lower said.

The family called 911 and the boy was taken to an area hospital where he later died from an overdose. Preliminary information shows he died from a combination of fentanyl, amphetamine and methamphetamine, Lower said.

The family reported the overdose to police, he said. They also had some evidence of where the narcotics had come from, Lower added.

Olympia detectives and the Thurston County Narcotics Task Force began to investigate and the suspect was identified and arrested Monday on 16th Lane Northeast, near North Thurston High School.

Investigators also obtained search warrants for a vehicle and the suspect’s residence. He faces additional charges after those searches, Lower said.

In addition to controlled substance homicide, the man was booked for second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver marijuana while armed, and the manufacture, delivery and possession with intent to distribute imitation controlled substance.

The suspect was set to appear in court Tuesday.
