Snow-covered roads delay schools and colleges Monday morning. Here’s what we know

The weekend’s wintry mix of snow and rain has created icy conditions that have delayed schools and activities around Thurston County Monday morning.

Anna Lindeman, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle, said the weekend snow won’t be the last of it.

Lindeman said the Olympia area will see continued snow shower activity throughout the day today. She said there will likely be a mix of rain and snow as the temperature continues to rise, but things will stay pretty cool with highs in the upper 30s.

She said the Olympia area shouldn’t expect to see much more snow accumulation, but higher elevations could see an extra inch before Tuesday.

Lindeman said temperatures are going to fall below freezing Monday evening, and any melting snow that happened earlier will likely freeze. She said that’s where the concern lies.

She said there’s currently a low pressure center that is hanging out along the coast that will inject more moisture into the region from Monday to Tuesday.

“That’s going to provide continued shower activity, although it’s really hard to say exactly how much or how heavy,” Lindeman said.

Showers should taper off by Tuesday afternoon, but more chances for snow are expected later in the week.

School districts

North Thurston Public Schools: 3 hour late start. No preschool. No out-of-district transportation. After-school activities will continue as scheduled. Summit Virtual Academy will operate on a regular schedule.

Olympia SD: 3 hour late start. Morning buses on snow routes. No AM or PM preschool, but full-day program continues. No out-of-district transportation. No district transportation to New Market Skills Center. No zero-hour classes. No before-school activities. No Avanti High School morning academic support or activities. No morning child care. Lunch will be served throughout the district.

Tumwater SD: 2 hour late start. Morning buses on snow routes. No preschool. No out of district transportation. No morning Cascadia High School, no morning New Market session.

Griffin SD: 3 hour late start. No preschool. Morning buses on snow routes, no out-of-district transportation. No breakfast served. No morning volleyball practice. Buses on Emergency Snow Routes for all PM Routes. Boys & Girls Club is available in the afternoon. The volleyball game at 4:30 @ Marshall Middle School will go on as planned.

Rochester SD: 2 hours late start. No AM preschool. No AM New Market. No breakfast.

Oakville SD: 2 hour late start.

Centralia SD: 2 hour late start. Morning buses on snow routes. No AM preschool. No out of district transportation.

Shelton SD: 2 hour late start. No morning preschool. No out-of-district transportation.

North Mason SD: 2 hour late start. No preschool. No West Sound Tech bus.

Olympic Academy South: 2 hour late start. No morning breakfast will be served, effective Feb. 4.

Napavine SD: 2 hour late start. No out-of-district transportation.

Chehalis SD: 2 hour late start. Morning buses on snow routes. No morning preschool. No out-of-district transportation.

Boistfort SD: 2 hour late start. Morning and afternoon buses on snow routes.

Winlock SD: 2 hour late start. Morning buses on snow routes. No out-of-district transportation. WMS/HS doors open at 9:45 a.m. and WMES doors open at 10:10 a.m.

Adna SD: 2 hour late start.

Evaline SD: 2 hour late start.

Hood Canal SD: 2 hour late start. No preschool. No out-of-district transportation.

Toledo SD: 2 hour late start. No preschool.

Grapeview SD: 10:45 a.m. start time. Buses on snow routes.

Satsop SD: 2 hour late start. AM/PM Buses on snow routes. No a.m. preschool. No out-of-district transportation.

Willapa Valley SD: 2 hour late start. No a.m. preschool.

Southside SD: 90 minutes late.

Private schools

St. Michael Parish School, Olympia: 2 hour late start. No half-day Pre-Kindergarten. No morning care.

Pope John Paul II High School: 2 hour late start.

Charles Wright Academy: 2 hour late start. Buses will travel on regular routes and arrive at stops 2 hours later than normal.

Colleges

The Evergreen State College: Delayed 3 hours. Students should check with their faculty regarding the status of their classes. Required personnel should report at their normal scheduled time.

Saint Martin’s University: Delayed 3 hours. All operations begin at 11 a.m.

Centralia College: Centralia College East in Morton is beginning 2 hours late. Classes occurring before 10 am are canceled.

Pierce College: 2 hours late. Opening at 10 a.m.

Olympic College: Late start at 10 am on all campuses.

UW Tacoma: Opening at 11 am.

Organizations

Skokomish Tribe: 2 hour late start.
