Tumwater Police Chief Jon Weiks has announced his retirement, and Deputy Chief Jay Mason will serve as acting chief starting March 1, Mason announced during a Feb. 11 Public Health & Safety Committee meeting.

Weiks has worked for the Tumwater Police Department for 37 years, according to a news release from city spokesperson Jason Wettstein.

“After decades of service as a leader in our community, Chief Weiks recently let us know that he intends to retire from the City,” Mayor Debbie Sullivan said in the news release. “Words cannot express the stability and professionalism that he brought to this role and the deep care he has shown for people here in Tumwater.”

Weiks started out as a patrol officer, then worked his way up to detective, an administrative/training officer, a DARE officer, major collision investigator, background investigator, acting lieutenant, traffic officer, Criminal Justice Training Commission collision investigation instructor, CJTC regional training coordinator, RADAR/LIDAR instructor and a crime prevention specialist.

He was promoted to Commander in May 2008, then to Acting Chief in February 2017, and then to Chief in May 2017.
