High wind warning, flood watch issued for Olympia area as 60 mph gusts expected overnight
A high wind warning and flood watch has been issued for the Olympia area Monday into Tuesday as a strong low pressure system just offshore moves its way across the state.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Logan Howard said the Olympia area could see wind gusts of up to 60 mph Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The high wind warning is set to expire at 10 a.m. Feb. 25. But the flood watch for the Chehalis River, which runs from Lewis County into Grays Harbor, will lag, with the river still rising until Wednesday or Thursday.
Howard said the Olympia area should expect to see another inch to 2 inches of rain accumulate. The high wind gusts overnight combined with the saturated soils could result in downed trees, power line damage and outages.
Howard said NWS Seattle is monitoring a marginal thunderstorm threat as well. There could be some lightning strikes along with the gusty winds and heavy downpours.
A high pressure system will follow the storms and could bring a chance of partly sunny weather on Wednesday, when the high temperature is expected to be near 59. Another chance of rain will come this weekend.
