Fire destroys Jefferson Street apartment in downtown Olympia, battalion chief says

A Jefferson Street apartment was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon, according to the Olympia Fire Department.

About 11:40 a.m. Sunday, fire crews were dispatched to a home that had been converted into three apartments in the 800 block of Jefferson Street Southeast, Battalion Chief Jason Waters said.

But only one of those units was damaged, he said. An unidentified object that was too close to a wall heater is believed to have triggered the blaze, he said.

Jefferson Street was closed by Olympia police during the fire, Waters said.

No residents were hurt, he said.

One cat died, but four other cats survived, Waters said.

Jefferson Street has been reopened to traffic and the building has been turned back over to the property owner, he said.
