A 43-year-old woman was arrested last week after police say she broke into the former Olympia City Hall building in the 900 block of Plum Street.

About 6:30 a.m. March 5, an employee showed up to work — the municipal court and related offices are still in that building — and found a broken exterior window, Olympia police Lt. Paul Lower said.

Police arrived and saw the broken window, then discovered a woman inside the building, throwing things around, Lower said. Police tried to talk to her, but she began to yell and ran out a back door.

More police were waiting for her, he said.

Police then checked inside and found a number of offices that had been ransacked, including a couch that had been destroyed, Lower said. They also found several items stacked on a push cart.

Police think she had been in the building for some time, he said.

A full damage estimate wasn’t immediately available, although the cost to replace the window was estimated at $1,000, Lower said.

The woman was booked on suspicion of second-degree burglary.
