Three people died at the scene of a wrong-way crash near the Scatter Creek rest area in south Thurston County Sunday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.

About 5:30 a.m., an SUV and a sedan crashed in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5. One vehicle was occupied by two women, the other a man, according to updated information released by State Patrol.

The male driver was driving south in the northbound lanes. Details about who died are still pending.

After the initial collision, a third driver, headed north, crashed into the car occupied by the two women, according to State Patrol.

That driver, a 21-year-old University Place woman, was not injured and not impaired and was allowed to leave the scene after providing a statement and information to troopers, Trooper John Dattilo said.

She also called 911, according to State Patrol.

Northbound I-5 was blocked for five hours, troopers say.
