Here are 6 construction projects that are underway or coming to the Lacey area

Lacey City Council received an update on Tuesday about current and future construction projects in the area.

Here are some of those projects.

Currently underway

The College Street Northeast extension. This project, which is expected to last through summer 2026, will extend College Street from Eighth Avenue Northeast to 15th Avenue Northeast. It also will create a new T-intersection at College Street Northeast and Sixth Avenue Northeast. The $9.5 million contract was awarded in January.

The 400 pressure zone transmission main project. This is a 3,200-linear-foot, 12-inch iron water main that’s being installed on Pacific Avenue, east of Marvin Road, between McAllister Court and Chatham Drive Southeast. The new main is needed to increase system redundancy and improve transmission to and from the nearby Steilacoom reservoir, a city official previously said. The $1.4 million contract also was awarded in January.

The new Lacey police station. Work continues on the 40,000-square-foot building across from Lacey City Hall and the old police station. The $61.5 million station is expected to open this year. The construction site is between Interstate 5 and Lacey City Hall.

Future 2025 projects

Intersection improvements at Sleater Kinney Road and 14th Avenue Southeast. The intersection near the Panorama retirement community is a four-way stop. The city is going to replace the overhead flashing stop light with four LED flashing light stop signs at each corner, plus make other improvements.

New pedestrian crossing on Ruddell Road. The crossing placed between 29th Court Southeast and 30th Avenue Southeast will have flashing beacons. This project is expected to be complete in early 2026.

“That’s when I can stop taking my life in my hands by running across that street,” said council member Robin Vazquez, who lives in the area.

Eighth Avenue Southeast rehabilitation. This might not be the most recognizable street in Lacey. It runs west from Sleater Kinney Road Southeast, behind Marshall’s and in front of the Lacey South Sound Chamber office, just north of Pacific Avenue. Although it looks like a parking lot, it is a street. The street will be reconstructed and re-striped and get storm drain improvements.
