A sailboat, the equipment on board and a dinghy were stolen, Olympia police say
A 53-year-old Snoqualmie man was arrested on suspicion of multiple crimes last month after police connected him to a stolen sailboat, stolen equipment on board and possibly stolen oysters, according to Olympia police.
About 8:30 a.m. March 9, police were dispatched to a marina in the 500 block of Columbia Street where the boat owner reported a missing sailboat.
Police also learned that there had been a series of thefts from boats in the area, Olympia police Lt. Paul Lower said. They checked surveillance video and recognized the suspect, he said.
Police also checked with city of Olympia park rangers, who pointed them to a sailboat tied up to another boat near East Bay, Lower said.
With the assistance of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, Olympia police headed out to the boat and arrested 53-year-old man. An estimated $20,000 in stolen equipment was found as were the oysters, Lower said. A stolen dinghy, tied up to the sailboat, was reported missing from Oregon, he said.
Police contacted the state Department of Fish & Wildlife, and workers seized the oysters for possible charges, Lower said.
The suspect was booked on suspicion of first-degree theft and possession of stolen property.
