A failed culvert that closed a highway east of Lacey Thursday evening will now take weeks to repair, the state Department of Transportation announced.

WSDOT officials had previously said the road was closed until further notice.

The reason for the longer repair is because the culvert is 20 feet under the road. That means the road will be excavated in both directions, then the culvert will be replaced, according to WSDOT.

The closure is on state Route 510 between Old Pacific Highway Southeast and Rockcress Drive.

“The Washington State Department of Transportation cannot give a precise timeline for reopening,” officials said in a news release. “However, it is estimated that repairs will take several weeks.”

The highway was closed Thursday evening, April 24, following an inspection of a culvert under the roadway. The inspection revealed the culvert failed due to a blockage, according to WSDOT.

Until the highway can reopen, travelers will need to use alternate routes, WSDOT says.
