The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a woman’s death last week at Capitol Forest, a spokesman for the department said Sunday.

The sheriff’s office is still trying to figure out the circumstances surrounding the shooting, so for the moment they are treating it as a homicide, Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Brooks said.

About 6:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies and firefighters were dispatched to Capitol Forest, west of Olympia. The woman, thought to be in her 60s, suffered a gunshot wound to her lower chest, Brooks said.

The person she was with, who Brooks would not identify, could not get cell phone service in the area, so that person drove the woman to a different area before calling 911, he said.

The woman died before she could be airlifted to a hospital, Brooks said.

He described the person she was with as somewhat cooperative, but so far not fully cooperative to the investigation.

“We are treating it as a criminal matter until we know more,” Brooks said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Thurston County Sheriff’s Office detectives at detectives@co.thurston.wa.us.
