Olympia police used a ballistic shield to pin down a knife-wielding suspect aboard an Intercity Transit bus on Friday evening, a spokesman for the department said.

About 6:20 p.m., police were dispatched to a disturbance on a bus in the 300 block of Eighth Avenue Southeast. They found a 29-year-old man inside the bus at its midpoint. He had been yelling and swearing at passengers and appeared to be threatening them, Police Lt. Paul Lower said.

The driver told the man to get off the bus, but he swung his knife in the driver’s direction, Lower said.

Passengers seated in the front of the bus were able to get off, but four people were still in the back of the bus, he said.

An officer tried to get the man to put down the knife, but he refused and then threw the knife at the officer, but it missed, Lower said.

Several officers then used a ballistic shield to pin the man down and take him into custody.

The 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion of felony harassment, attempted first-degree assault, displaying a weapon, disorderly conduct and second-degree criminal trespass, jail records show.
