A Lacey family needed to be rescued from a residential fire on Thursday evening when the only exit from their home was blocked by flames.

Lacey Fire District 3 and mutual aid from Olympia Fire responded to a multifamily residence on the 1600 block of Glen Mary Lane. According to LFD3, “heavy smoke and flames” blocked the only exit stairwell, trapping three adults, one infant and one pet on the building’s second story.

LFD3 said construction crews attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose before fire crews arrived, but firefighters extinguished the fire completely and rescued all residents. Two victims suffered from smoke inhalation.

Chris Patti, deputy chief of operations for LFD3, said the fire’s cause is so far undetermined, but LFD3 reported in a Facebook post that it began in combustibles stored beneath the stairs.

The fire district warned, “DO NOT store combustible material (clothes, cardboard, fire wood) under your stairs as it may be your only way out/escape route in a fire.”
