One dead after Rochester man fires gun during dog training exercise Tuesday
Correction: A 23-year-old Rochester man died June 3 during a dog training exercise that involved gunfire. A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the deceased was a 22-year-old Lewis County man.
Thurston County detectives arrested a 64-year-old Rochester man Tuesday for allegedly shooting and killing a participant in a dog training exercise.
The shooting occurred at a business west of Rochester near the intersection of 183rd Avenue Southwest and Fortstrom Street, according to court records.
Sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to the business after witnesses reported a person had been shot, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Court records and the Sheriff’s Office news release described the deceased as a 22-year-old Lewis County man. However, Coroner Gary Warnock said Thursday the man was 23-years-old and lived in area where the shooting happened.
Detectives investigated the shooting throughout the day and ultimately arrested the Rochester man on suspicion of first-degree manslaughter.
During the investigation, detectives determined a group of people had been conducting working dog training exercises that included filming a training video involving gunfire. Court records indicate the filming was for an advertisement.
The Rochester man, who was one of the dog handlers, allegedly fired a weapon loaded with live ammunition and struck the Lewis County man.
“This is a devastating and heartbreaking event,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its release. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. The emotional toll involved on everyone is significant and we recognize the deep pain caused by this loss.”
Deputies booked the Rochester man into the Thurston County jail Tuesday afternoon.
