A man accused of assaulting a downtown store employee later identified himself as “Satan,” according to Olympia police.

About 10:10 p.m. June 5, police were dispatched to a convenience store in the 200 block of Washington Street Northeast after a 911 call about a disturbance.

The door to the business was locked, but police could see that one man was assaulting another behind the store counter, Lt. Paul Lower said.

Police forced their way into the business and stopped the assault. The 23-year-old employee, who suffered some bruises, was treated at the scene, he said.

Police then interviewed the man and learned that he told the suspect the business was closing and that he needed to leave.

The suspect then approached the employee and began arguing with him about closing the store, Lower said.

The employee told him that if he didn’t leave he would call police.

Lower said the suspect then pulled out a glass pipe, filled it with a crystalline substance and smoked it before he came around the counter and began to assault the store worker.

Police suspect the substance was methamphetamine.

The suspect, who said he was Satan, could not be identified, said Lower, so he was booked as a “John Doe.”

He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary, which includes the assault, possession of a controlled substance and use of drug paraphernalia, Lower said.
