Summer got off to a very cool start on Saturday with temperatures in South Sound nearly setting records for new lows, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.

The daytime “high” in the Seattle/Tacoma area was 58 degrees, nearly tying the record of 57 degrees set for June 21 in 1981, said meteorologist Samantha Borth on Sunday.

The same cool conditions played out in the Olympia area as well on Saturday.

The high was 60 degrees, which also nearly tied the record of 59 degrees set in 1997, Borth said.

So far, the start of summer is about 10-15 degrees cooler than normal, she said. Earlier in the month, temperatures rose into the 80s and 90s, she said.

And it’s not going to get hot anytime soon.

South Sound temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-70s through Tuesday, then the weather will cool again later in the week as another weather system moves through the area.

Expect highs then to be in the upper 60s and low 70s, Borth said.

Although the region has experienced cooler weather of late, rainfall totals for the month are behind pace.

Through Saturday, about .35 inches of rain had fallen in South Sound when slightly more than an inch of rain is normal for the area, she said.
