The Boston Harbor Association’s largest annual event, the July 3 fireworks show, has been canceled this year. Instead, the BHA board announced they will host the first-ever Boston Harbor Neighborhood Party at the Park on the same day.

At a February association meeting, the board announced that the July 3 fireworks show would be canceled. Board members cited increasing costs and risks associated with the show.

During the meeting, board member Kate Gervais explained that shore and boat attendance had grown too large for the marina and BHA to manage. Last year, more than 500 boats came out to the event compared to roughly 200 in previous years.

Board members also cited potential liabilities for the marina and BHA as reasons why the fireworks show will not be held.

Instead, BHA intends to throw a July 3 community party in addition to the annual July 3 kids bike parade. The parade will meet at the corner of Commercial and 73rd avenues at 10:30 a.m. for registration and a chance for participants to decorate their bikes. Participants and parents of participants are instructed to sign a waiver before the event.

The parade will last approximately an hour from 11 a.m. to noon before the Boston Harbor Neighborhood Party at the Park is set to kick off at 1 p.m. at Burfoot Park.

Entrance is $10 for non-member Boston Harbor residents and free for BHA members. For four hours, community members can enjoy barbecue, live music and games for all ages.

A local sign announcing the cancellation of the fireworks show said the Community Garage Sale BHA organizes is still on for this year. It will take place the second weekend in August in the Boston Harbor neighborhood.
