2 pedestrians killed in downtown Olympia when two vehicles crashed, police say

Two pedestrians were killed Wednesday afternoon in downtown Olympia, according to police.

About 5 p.m., a car and truck crashed in the area of Fifth Avenue and Simmons Street near Capitol Lake. As a result of the collision, the truck careened onto the sidewalk and killed two adult women walking, Olympia police Lt. Paul Lower told The Olympian.

Both died at the scene, he said. One of those women was in her 60s, he said.

Olympia police are receiving help with the investigation from Washington State Patrol, and the Thurston County Coroner was en route to the scene about 5:30 p.m, he said.

Police were expected to be on scene for several hours, Lower said.

Streets have been closed in the area of Fifth Avenue and Simmons Street, backing up traffic coming into downtown from the west side, he said.

Fifth Avenue between Water Street and the bridge to the west side was closed down about 5 p.m. Wednesday after a two-vehicle crash killed two female pedestrians walking along the sidewalk. Olympia police and the Washington State Patrol are investigating.
