Suspect wanted out of King County causes crash in Tumwater, 1 airlifted to hospital
One person was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after an 18-year-old man wanted in King County struck vehicles in the intersection of Capital and Tumwater boulevards in Tumwater on Friday morning.
According to the Tumwater Police Department’s social media, officers were requested to check the area of New Market Street at Tumwater Boulevard for reports of an 18-year-old man with a felony warrant and a “caution endorsement.”
The man was wanted in King County and was believed to be in the area based on his ankle monitoring device.
At 8:45 a.m., Tumwater officers located the man asleep in his vehicle in a parking lot off of New Market Street. As officers approached, they deployed a pursuit intervention device under his vehicle before waking him up. While they were talking to the suspect, he refused to get out of the vehicle and then fled.
According to TPD, as officers were trying to catch up to the suspect, he struck vehicles in the intersection of Capital and Tumwater boulevards. Two vehicles were hit, and one veered into a building at the southeast corner of the intersection.
The man fled on foot, but was quickly captured by a TPD officer and taken into custody. The driver of the vehicle that struck the building was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries.
The occupants of the second car left with minor injuries.
The suspect was evaluated and determined to have no injuries. The suspect is being processed for DUI and will be booked at the completion of the investigation, according to TPD.
No one inside the building was injured and the vehicle did not penetrate the building.
Officers discovered the vehicle the suspect was driving, a new GMC Denali with temporary tags, had been taken during a carjacking incident in Tukwila on July 10. It is unknown at this time if it was the same suspect.
The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the collision investigation while TPD investigates the suspect’s actions.
