One person was airlifted to the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle with life-threatening injuries following a house fire on Sunday in southeast Olympia.

Fire Officer Russell Hermann with the Olympia Fire Department said a single engine was dispatched at around 10:40 a.m. Sunday to the house fire at Lybarger Street Southeast and Carlyon Avenue Southeast, near Olympia High School and Pioneer Elementary. When the unit arrived, the house was actively on fire, with visible smoke, he said.

The family who lives in the home was there at the time of the fire, and those outside believed someone was still inside.

Hermann said the response was upgraded and OFD was assisted by Lacey Fire District 3, South Bay Fire Department District 8, and McLane Black Lake Fire District 9. Crews worked to put out the fire while searching for the person inside the house. Firefighters found the person on the first floor.

A medical unit took over care and the person was transferred to Providence St. Peter Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Hermann said they were then airlifted to UW Medical Center.

He said it’s unclear how the person is doing, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
