Lacey Fire District 3 crews responded Saturday afternoon to a quick-moving grass fire in a neighborhood’s common area, the department announced on social media.

The incident became a teachable moment for two juveniles who had been playing with a lighter in the grass, according to the fire district.

“After the fire started, they ran off,” the social media post reads. “Thankfully, the fire was extinguished before it reached the houses.”

The fire district decided that “every day must be a learning day,” the post reads, so after contacting the family, “the two juveniles learned about the dangers and consequences of playing with a lighter.”

While refilling a water tank, fire crews also had the opportunity to teach the neighborhood kids what they should and shouldn’t do if they find matches or a lighter, according to the post.
