A man who was found dead in a burning Rochester home Thursday has been identified.

Greg Haines, a 72-year-old Rochester man, died in his home on James Road Southwest in Rochester along with three large dogs, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said.

West Thurston Fire Authority crews responded to Haines’ home at about 9:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a structure fire, according to a news release issued by WTFA Fire Chief Nathan Drake.

Once there, crews observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the front door of the home. As crews battled the blaze, they located Haines and his dogs, all dead, inside.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” the release states.

Warnock said Haines’ cause of death would be determined following a Friday exam.

The release says the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
