Thurston County hit with sudden spike in power outages, utility data show
Thurston County was closing in on having all power restored to area utility customers this morning until an outage just before noon Tuesday, according to Puget Sound Energy and Find Energy data.
About 11:55 a.m., an area near Olympia Regional Airport lost power, affecting about 3,300 customers, Puget Sound Energy data show.
The outage is under investigation and an estimated restoration time has not been determined, according to PSE.
Find Energy, which also tracks outages, is reporting that 3,407 total utility customers are without power in Thurston County.
It was a hard weekend. A strong wind and rainstorm swept through the region on Saturday, knocking out power to almost 150,000 PSE customers, including those in Thurston County.
By Sunday morning, Find Energy reported that 24,000 Thurston utility customers did not have power. Not helping matters: it got cold as temperatures dropped into the 40s.
A spokesman for PSE said transmission lines that power substations were damaged in the storm. One was still being re-connected, but that involves working up in mountainous areas that the lines run through. PSE had helicopter crews flying throughout the Olympics and Cascades on Sunday to assess transmission line damage, the spokesman said.
