Person who died in fiery car wreck on I-5 on Wednesday has been identified

The person who died in a fiery car wreck on Dec. 3 on I-5 in south Thurston County has been identified by the county coroner as 67-year-old Richard L. Gairns, from Olympia.

The Olympian previously reported that the crash happened at around 6:30 a.m. just south of Grand Mound on northbound I-5. Gairns’ vehicle left the roadway and flipped onto its top, then caught fire. A trooper who responded to the scene was unable to remove Gairns from the vehicle. Fire crews later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Kameron Watts said the cause of the accident was still under investigation as of Friday morning.
