Police looking for man accused of raping teenager near Olympia intersection

Olympia police are investigating a rape that was reported earlier this month in the area of the Martin Way and Fourth Avenue intersection.

Between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Dec. 3, a 14-year-old girl was sitting on a bench near that intersection waiting for a friend to pick her up, police Lt. Paul Lower told The Olympian Tuesday.

As she waited, a man approached her and they began talking, Lower said.

During the conversation, the girl came to believe the man was armed with a handgun and followed him behind some nearby bushes where she was sexually assaulted, Lower said.

About 10 minutes later, the girl’s friend showed up and called out to her, which caused the man to run off.

The following day the victim was at an area hospital for an unrelated medical matter when she disclosed the sexual assault, prompting detectives to investigate, Lower said.

The victim described the rape suspect as white with short hair, stubble on his face and 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10. He was wearing white clothes and glasses with clear frames.

Police have reviewed security camera footage in the area, including images of a man leaving that general area around the time of the incident on Dec. 3, Lower said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Olympia police at 360-753-8300.
