2 Olympia drivers among 20 involved in Monday crash near Fife, State Patrol says

Two Olympia drivers were among 20 vehicles involved in a Monday morning crash near Fife, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Most of the drivers were unharmed in the wreck. Three people suffered minor injuries while a fourth was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.

The two Olympia drivers, ages 46 and 60, were not hurt, according to the State Patrol.

About 5 a.m. Monday, two drivers were headed north on Interstate 5, just north of Fife, when they struck debris in the road and came to a stop on the left shoulder.

However, the State Patrol memo said that “vehicles three through 14 swerved to avoid the debris and other vehicles,” and these “vehicles struck one another.”

More vehicles headed north also hit the debris, according to the State Patrol. All drivers came to a stop on the left shoulder.

What was the debris? Trooper Kameron Watts said the following on social media:

“The debris in the roadway was a car part such as (a) muffler or bumper that was lost from a car from a previous collision that took place right before 5 a.m.,” he said.

After the crash, that area of northbound I-5 was partially blocked for nearly four hours, according to the State Patrol.

Traffic was slowed in the area of northbound I-5 and Fife early Monday morning after multiple vehicles struck debris and other cars.
