First flu death of season reported in Thurston County. WA fatalities reach 39
A Thurston County resident has died of the flu, according to a Jan. 21 news release from Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.
The death is the first in Thurston County for the 2025-2026 season and among 39 lab-confirmed influenza deaths across the state, compared to only five reported this time last season, according to the release.
“Every year, hundreds of thousands of people in the United States are hospitalized from flu-related illnesses. Influenza-like illness activity in Washington is currently high, with influenza A being the most common strain circulating,” according to the release.
According to the release, those who have flu symptoms should stay home and avoid contact with people, except for medical care.
“While most people with flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral medications, certain people are at increased risk of serious complications, including young children, people 65 and older, pregnant people, and people with certain medical conditions,” according to the release.
PHSS has an online dashboard that tracks the number of hospital visits related to respiratory illnesses, and it’s updated weekly. It also tracks outbreaks and deaths.
According to the dashboard, influenza made up just under 2% of emergency room visits in the second week of January, and the level of transmission is below alert level.
The release included tips for lowering the risk of illness and the spread of viruses, including getting the flu vaccine. Other tips include washing your hands often, avoiding touching your face, staying home when sick, and wearing a mask.
