A semi hit a ‘feisty’ bald eagle on I-5, WSP says. The rescue was a team effort

A bald eagle was rescued from southbound Interstate 5 in Tumwater Sunday evening, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Sometime between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, the bird was hit by a passing vehicle and landed on the right shoulder of I-5 near Trosper Road, Trooper Kameron Watts said Tuesday.

The rescue was a collaborative effort, he said.

In addition to the Washington State Patrol, the state Department of Transportation, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and area residents helped the bird, Trooper Watts said.

It was not immediately clear if the bird was struck mid-flight or was hit on the ground, he said.

A semi-trailer clipped the bird, and rescuers took the animal to Raindancer Wild Bird Rescue in Olympia, according to the Raindancer Facebook page.

“The eagle is feisty, eating, and has no palpable injuries,” a Monday evening Facebook post reads. “We will be sending the eagle to our friends at Twin Harbors Wildlife Center for radiographs and continued care.”

Twin Harbors Wildlife Center is in Montesano, Grays Harbor County.
