Olympia teen arrested after assault video circulated on social media, police say

An 18-year-old woman was arrested Monday night on suspicion of first-degree assault while armed with a deadly weapon after she confronted a 16-year-old at a party over the weekend, according to Olympia police.

The dispute was over a suspected missing wallet, Lt. Paul Lower said Tuesday.

Video of the incident was allegedly shared on Instagram and Snapchat. A parent saw the video on one of those social media platforms and alerted police to it Monday night, Lower said.

It was not immediately clear who shot the video, Lower added.

Police began investigating and learned that the teens had gathered for a birthday party the night of Feb. 21 in the 100 block of Pear Street Northeast near downtown Olympia.

A check of the video allegedly shows the 18-year-old woman confronting the 16-year-old boy on an outer stairwell, asking if he “wants to make this hard or easy,” according to Lower.

She then allegedly punched him multiple times and produced what looked like a pink-colored pistol and put the barrel to the victim’s head.

According to Lower, the victim told the 18-year-old that he didn’t do anything wrong. She then ordered him to the ground and allegedly kicked him twice on the left side of the head as he knelt, while she held the gun in her right hand, Lower said.

Asked about the 16-year-old’s injuries, Lower said he had a swollen face from being kicked.

The gun turned out to be a pepper-ball gun, according to police.

The suspect was arrested Monday night in the 3500 block of 37th Court Northwest in west Olympia, according to the Thurston County jail log. She was still in jail as of Tuesday morning.

The incident is still under investigation, Lower said.

What court records show

The 18-year-old woman made her preliminary appearance in Thurston County Superior Court on Tuesday for the alleged crime of second-degree assault, according to court records. Prosecutors have not yet charged her. If they do, an arraignment is scheduled for March 3.

The court set bail at $5,000 and the woman was released with conditions, including no contact with the victim and she is not to possess a dangerous weapon.
