Bicyclist killed on state Route 3 in Mason County has been identified

A Mason County bicyclist who was hit and killed in a wreck on state Route 3 Friday afternoon has been identified, according to updated information released by the Washington State Patrol.

The man was identified by the Mason County Coroner’s Office.

About 3:50 p.m., Steven D. Thomas, 45, of Grapeview was riding north on the right shoulder of the highway at Anthony Road, according to the State Patrol.

A 44-year-old Shelton man driving a pick-up truck was headed in the same direction, troopers say.

According to the State Patrol, the Shelton man moved to the left to pass Thomas, but then the “bicycle moved into lane one” and was struck by the truck.

Thomas died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the State Patrol.

The Shelton driver stopped on the northbound shoulder of the highway, according to the WSP. He also was identified as an additional 911 caller.

The incident remains under investigation.
