Two people sent to hospital after crash that blocked I-5 in Thurston County

Two people were sent to the hospital with injuries on Thursday after a utility van struck another vehicle on I-5, causing a chain-reaction collision with several other vehicles on the interstate.

According to a news release from the Washington State Patrol, the collision was reported at around 1:15 p.m. on March 19. The utility van, driven by a Puyallup man, was traveling northbound on I-5 at Trosper Road in Tumwater in the far-left lane when he struck another vehicle in front of him.

The collision set off a chain reaction, and the second car hit a third, which then hit a fourth and a fifth. The two people in the third car, both from Chehalis, were sent to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia with injuries.

Drugs or alcohol were not involved in the collision, according to the release. The cause is still under investigation. The collision blocked the road for nearly two hours.
