South Sound I-5 drivers need to plan for delays this weekend, WSDOT warns

The state Department of Transportation is urging overnight and early-morning drivers to add 30 minutes to those trips because all lanes of Interstate 5 will be closed Friday and Saturday nights.

The lanes need to close so that crews can demolish the Steilacoom-DuPont Road overpass in south Pierce County.

The overpass demolition is part of the I-5/Mounts Road to Steilacoom-DuPont Road corridor improvements project. After the overpass is removed, crews will focus on adding a new HOV lane in both directions, according to WSDOT.

Here’s what to expect

  • All lanes of I-5 will be fully closed each night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
  • Law enforcement will direct traffic through the interchange at Exit 119 at Steilacoom-DuPont Road.
  • The detour will take place in both directions of I-5.

Here’s what WSDOT wants from drivers

  • Consider postponing or rescheduling discretionary trips.
  • Expect reduced speeds and congestion approaching the work zone.
  • Have a full tank of fuel or fully charged vehicle.
