Thurston County credit union confirms job cuts. Here’s what we know

The chief executive officer of Peak Credit Union, which was previously known as TwinStar Credit Union here before it merged with another credit union and changed its name, acknowledged job cuts on Tuesday.

The Olympian learned of the job cuts Tuesday morning and reached out to multiple people about them, including two who serve on the board of directors. They referred The Olympian to Chief Growth Officer Michelle Anderson who could not be reached.

President and CEO David Tuyo responded by email about 5 p.m.

“We can confirm that Peak Credit Union recently made some organizational changes that included the elimination of certain roles within the organization,” he wrote. “These decisions were not made lightly and reflect the need to align our structure with current economic conditions, our purpose as a credit union, and to ensure that we remain healthy, stable, and able to serve our members over the long term.

“Our focus right now is on supporting those impacted through this transition with care and respect. At the same time, we remain dedicated to serving more than 250,000 members across Washington and Oregon, with a continued commitment to community impact and long-term growth.”

The CEO has not yet responded to The Olympian’s questions about how many positions are affected.

Peak Credit Union came to be as the result of a recent merger between TwinStar Credit Union in the Olympia area and Northwest Community Credit Union in Eugene, Oregon.

Prior to the merger, Tuyo was named CEO of TwinStar, replacing former longtime CEO Jeff Kennedy, about a year ago. Tuyo started May 1, TwinStar previously announced.

Tuyo came to the Olympia area from California where he had served as president and CEO of University Credit Union in Los Angeles since 2017.

“Under his leadership, the credit union more than doubled its assets and members while significantly expanding its geographic footprint,” the previous announcement reads.

Peak Credit Union has 35 branches across Washington and Oregon, according to website information.
