Semi-truck crash spills 100 gallons of diesel on I-5 near Thurston, Pierce line
A semi-truck driver crashed on Interstate 5 near the Thurston and Pierce counties line Wednesday morning, spilling diesel and causing a traffic jam.
The incident occurred just after 3 a.m. at northbound I-5 milepost 119 in DuPont, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.
The semi-truck in lane one reportedly left the roadway to the right and crashed into multiple concrete barriers before coming to a rest in lanes one and two. The State Patrol has identified the semi-truck driver as a 42-year-old Ferndale man. First responders transported him to Madigan Army Medical Center to be treated for an injury, per the memo.
Up to 100 gallons of diesel spilled onto the roadway while traffic continued by in the far left lane, State Trooper Kameron Watts shared on X at about 3:50 a.m. The roadway was blocked for nearly two-and-a-half hours, according to the memo.
The cause of the collision remained under investigation Wednesday morning, per the memo, but troopers have ruled out the involvement of drugs or alcohol. So far, troopers have accused the Ferndale man of second-degree negligent driving.
No other people or vehicles were involved in the collision, the memo shows.
