Thurston Co. driver crashes into tree after driving erratically on I-5, WSP says
A 42-year-old Rochester woman drove erratically on Interstate 5 before crashing into a tree in Thurston County during rush hour traffic Wednesday, according to the State Patrol.
The crash occurred at about 5:15 p.m. on the I-5 exit to the Maytown Rest Area at milepost 93, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.
The woman traveled south in a silver 2008 Honda Civic sedan at milepost 95 when she left the road to the left and struck a shoulder barrier, per the memo. The woman then crossed all lanes of travel and struck the right shoulder guardrail. She reportedly took the exit to the Maytown Rest Area, left the roadway to the right and crashed into a tree.
First responders transported the woman to Providence St. Peter Hospital for treatment, according to the memo. No other people or vehicles were involved in the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, the memo states. WSP has ruled out the involvement of drugs or alcohol, and the woman has not been accused of any crimes as of Wednesday night.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Office collision investigators assisted the Washington State Patrol at the scene, according to a TCSO Facebook post. The Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a “serious injury collision” and said the rest area would be closed during the investigation.
The roadway was blocked at the exit for just over two hours and 30 minutes, per the WSP memo.
