Blaze destroys cars at Thurston Co. auto yard, hours after similar fire nearby

Firefighters put out a blaze that damaged many cars at an auto wrecking yard in Yelm early Thursday morning.

The fire occurred after midnight at Safari Auto Wrecking on Northern Pacific Road Southeast.

Southeast Thurston Fire Authority crews responded to the blaze at about 12:44 a.m. and found multiple cars on fire, the agency shared on Facebook Thursday afternoon. Firefighters contained the blaze to about 10 cars that were damaged, Fire Chief Mark King told The Olympian.

King said no one was injured, and no civilians were in immediate danger.

The Southeast Thurston Fire Authority and Yelm Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire, King said.

Surveillance footage of the yard did not reveal anything that gave the owner cause for concern, King said. However, the investigation is continuing in light of a similar auto wrecking yard fire in Pierce County.

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to a blaze in the 2000 block of Meridian East just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, the agency shared on Facebook Thursday morning.

Firefighters found stacks of unprocessed vehicles on fire and noted ongoing explosions in the area. Crews got the fire under control by about 3:32 a.m. and cleared the scene before 5 a.m. Thursday.

No one was injured, according to the agency post. The Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
